The Hunt for the Perfect Mascara

I have been on a hunt for the perfect mascara!  This is not out of necessity — I actually like the one I currently use — but I’ve been using it for 8 years.  I’m sure technology has improved mascara since then, so I want to try some options.

For a long time, I used Maybeline in the pink and green tube.  Until I discovered this:

Loreal Voluminous Mascara!  I started using it the year I was Miss Oklahoma.  It is just a great mascara – affordable and volumizing (hence the name).

But one of my friends raved about Diorshow Mascara.  Whew!  It has a hefty price tag, but I finally decided to give it a try.  I opted for the Diorshow Backstage mascara.

On the first try, I wasn’t really convinced.  It is a very dry formula.  It didn’t glide across my lashes like my Loreal.  However, after repeated use, it’s growing on me.  It gives really good volume!  But is it better than my Loreal Volumnious?  Not sure yet.

Then, I read that the Pioneer Woman looovvveesss this Benefit “They’re Real” lashes.  So I decided to give it a try.  Not a pricey as the Diorshow, but not  as affordable as my discount drugstore find!

I really want to love this mascara, but I just don’t.  The little brush doesn’t give my lashes any volume (and I keep poking myself in the eye trying to get make some volume happen.) The formula is almost too liquidy.  And the very worst part, I can’t get it off my lashes at night!  I’ve tried many different eye makeup removers, and this one has staying power (one plus), but this one won’t be a re-purchase for me.

Finally, I got this free sample of Lancome Doll Lashes.  This one might be my favorite, if only I was coordinated enough to use it!  Look at this cool angled brush.  One end is full and it tapers to a narrow end.  Ideally, I think the thicker end should get your outside lashes with the tapered end getting the inner corner.

This worked great on my right eye!  But I cannot figure out how to put the mascara on my left eye without getting mascara on my nose, in my eye, across my forehead, in my hair. I’m sure you get the point.  I just can’t figure this one out.

So… drumroll… when it’s all said and done, I really like the Diorshow.  Overall, Bang for the Buck, I’ll have to stand by my Loreal Voluminous.

What about you?  Are you in love with a mascara?  Anything you recommend I try?

How to Get Free MAC Lipstick

Who doesn’t love getting rewarded with free beauty products?  Some of you probably already know this, but MAC Cosmetics has a recycling program where you can earn a free tube of lipstick.

If you take 6 used containers of MAC makeup back (old eyeshadow cases, lip gloss, foundation bottles, etc.), you get your choice of a free, full-size MAC lipstick (these normally sell for $14.50)  I secretly love finishing a container of makeup… one step closer to free, pretty lips!

Sometimes, I pick out one of my favorite MAC lipsticks that I’m running low on.  Often, I’ll use my freebie to experiment with a new color.

I just picked out this new tube of “Ravishing”.  It’s a coral color.  It looks a little shocking in the tube, but I really love it on my lips.  It’s a good summer color!

So, if you got a free lipstick, which MAC color would you choose?

Dark Spots Be Gone!

It happened last summer.  I woke up one morning, looked in the mirror to do my makeup, and saw it… a brown piece of dirt (about the size of a pea) on my right cheek.

I tried to wipe it off.  Wouldn’t budge.  I used some exfoliater and scrubbed harder.  Still there. I thought maybe it was spray tan gone wrong.  I waited a week.  The “piece of dirt” was still there.

Yikes!  Could it be?  My first dark spot popping up on my, until then, smooth, blemish free, 20-something skin.

At first, I decided to just cover the bad boy in makeup.  Then other little spots started popping up on my face – payback for years of year-round tanning bed use – all in an attempt to be perfectly golden brown for prom, pageants, and summer shorts.

About that time, I noticed ads for Clinique’s Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector.  Now, I’m not one to give in to advertising (wait, what am I thinking… I’m the advertising executive’s dream… I’m a sucker for anything advertised in glossy magazine pages), but in the ad, Clinique showed the dark spots disappearing from the egg.  I thought, why not give it a try.

It works!  It’s not cheap (but who ever said looking good was easy).  It cost $49.50 for a small bottle.  Each bottle lasts exactly a month.  I saw really dramatic results after just one month.  I decided to buy one more bottle.  After two months, my dark spots were nearly non-existent.  Even now, I have to look REALLY hard to find that dark spot hanging around on my right cheek.

If you have dark spots, I suggest you give it a try.  No dark spots?  Well, lucky you!
